Autonomous forklifts revolutionize sortation system operations

Automated guided vehicles (AGVs) enhance productivity and safety at sortation systems, paving the way for multi-purpose use

The challenge

In today’s challenging labor market it’s proving increasingly difficult to recruit qualified forklift drivers, leading to supply chain disruptions for many companies. Moreover, accidents can arise when manned forklifts interact with warehouse equipment—in particular, sortation systems.

While automated forklifts are commonly used in warehouses, they’re often limited to specific, standalone tasks like loading or unloading a vehicle, or retrieving and putting away pallets. It’s clear, though, that their functionality isn’t being fully utilized.

The challenge was to create a solution rooted in automation that could navigate sortation systems more accurately and safely than manned forklifts, freeing up humans to focus on the complex needs of the business. Long term, the challenge was to leverage the versatility of automated forklifts, utilizing them for multiple different operations and revolutionizing warehouse operations at large.
