Box-carrying robots climb shelves to collect and replenish goods, working alongside humans within existing warehouse infrastructures
A surge in demand for consumer goods over recent years has placed immense pressure on the operations of e-commerce businesses. On a daily basis, warehouse management is having to grapple with a number of challenges, from rapidly sourcing cartons and then replenishing them, to optimize storage space.
Today, it’s not uncommon for warehouses to have a racking system of up to 12 meters in height. Many of these warehouses will rely on humans to first manually search for goods and then operate forklifts to retrieve the cartons for packing. This process is slow and expensive, requiring a lot of physical work.
Recognizing both the integral function of warehouse personnel and the ongoing labor shortages, we wanted to free up human capacity to focus on more strategic activities. The challenge was to create an automated solution to sourcing and loading that worked alongside humans and that could be easily adapted to suit any warehouse environment.
