The challenge

Internally at Maersk, we wanted to see if we could improve productivity in a busy cross-dock by enabling data-driven decision-making for our teams and rewarding individuals who exceeded expectations.

Available labor management systems can track labor productivity, enable data-driven decisions and help improve productivity.

Our first proof-of-concept ran from October 2019 to February 2020 and deployed a labor management system at South Gate, a premier cross-dock facility in Southern California handling hundreds of containers per day. It quickly became apparent that because the traditional system relied on manual input — requiring every carton to be scanned by hand — it forced staff to take extra steps, change their behavior and distorted the reality of what workers were actually processing.

What we needed was a system of technologies that could view unloading, analyze and predict progress, and communicate with the crossdock team in real time.
