Remotely operated forklifts offer safer and more flexible working conditions

Remotely operated forklifts could be the answer to increased safety and working flexibility for Maersk warehouse workers.

1

The challenge

In 2020, there were 78 fatal and 7,290 non-fatal forklift casualties in the US alone, according to the National Safety Council. At Maersk, employee safety is a non-negotiable priority. We will always go the extra mile to ensure a safe workplace for all colleagues, whether that’s in a warehouse, an office, on the road or at sea. And so, we wanted to address the danger that forklift operations pose to warehouse employees in our Maersk Innovation Center.

Typically, forklift operators have to be on-site to drive the equipment. While the pandemic opened up opportunities for remote work for many people, warehouse workers have been unable to benefit. But if our warehouse employees did have the means to work remotely, we would be able to tackle the safety challenge surrounding forklift operations.
