Currently, when a shipper wants to transport cargo, each part of the journey is handled by a different provider. What needs to be a simple and connected process soon becomes fragmented and complex.
Unsurprisingly, this shipping model leaves a lot of room for error. On any given shipment, a logistics company has to deal with multiple invoices and manage administrative tasks with multiple shipping providers. This can lead to delays, which will increase a shipment’s carbon emissions and lead to demurrage and detention charges.
Crucially, there is low visibility of a shipment’s inland transit, which is made more complicated by the fact that the responsibility for a shipment often falls in between the different providers involved. This makes it almost impossible to estimate transit times and deliver cost-efficient inventory planning.
